Questions parents & teachers ask

What is a fact family?

A fact family is a set of related facts built from the same three numbers. Add/subtract families have a whole and two parts (3, 4, 7); multiply/divide families have a product and two factors (3, 4, 12). Each trio makes four facts — two for the operation and two for its inverse.

Why do fact families matter?

Fact families show that subtraction undoes addition, and division undoes multiplication. Once a child sees that 3 + 4 = 7 and 7 − 4 = 3 use the very same numbers, they learn facts in groups of four instead of one at a time — and inverse operations stop feeling like new skills.

What order should kids learn fact families in?

Addition & subtraction fact families come first, in Grade 1–2, alongside number bonds. Multiplication & division fact families follow in Grade 3–4, once the times tables are taking hold. Each worksheet above gives the number triangle and leaves the four facts to complete.

Are these fact families worksheets free?

Yes — every set is free to generate and print, with answer keys, no account and no watermark.
